CFD Modelling

What is CFD?

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) flow modelling is a well-established computational tool that can be used to provide tangible benefits to a range of renewable energy applications, including wind, wave and tidal projects. SgurrEnergy offers a range of flow modelling services appropriate for these applications.

Why use CFD for wind flow modelling?

Our CFD services can provide you with more accurate energy yield predictions and reduced uncertainty, increasing the bankability of your wind farm project.

  • More accurate energy yield predictions
  • Reduced flow model uncertainty giving higher P90/P50 ratios
  • Improved modelling of wind shear and turbulence for wind turbine site suitability
  • More advanced wake modelling capability

windmodellingHistorically wind farms have been built in open areas, but as more projects are being considered in regions of complex topography and forestry, industry standard software tools like WAsP are unable to accurately model the wind flow.  Without accurate modelling on these sites, prediction of energy yields and wind turbine loading are both prone to reduced accuracy and high uncertainty. This in turn influences the revenues and maintenance costs related to an operational wind farm on that site.

CFD can provide a detailed understanding of the effect of complex site surroundings on the wind regime. SgurrEnergy offers the powerful combination of Galion Lidar’s wind monitoring capability along with a CFD wind flow modelling service that is able to fully examine even the most complex wind farm surroundings. As with wind flow modelling, SgurrEnergy validates all computational models with available measured data. Detailed sensitivity studies are also conducted for CFD wind flow models to minimise uncertainty and to ensure generation of a robust wind flow model.

Using our CFD services to model your site will give you the full picture of wind flow and help to accurately inform decisions on the project from the very earliest stages.

We have extensive experience in dealing with forestry influenced wind regimes, having assessed over 3000MW of wind farm developments in such wind climates and have provided technical advice to a range of clients including Forestry Commission Wales, ScottishPower, Airtricity, Scottish & Southern, npower Renewables, Your Energy Ltd, Infinis and many others.

SgurrEnergy expertise in CFD modelling has been highlighted by recent work for the Carbon Trust. We have been working in partnership with Ansys, RWE Npower Renewables and ScottishPower on a project to develop improved and validated computational flow models for wind farms in complex terrain using Galion Lidar measurements.
