Historically wind farms have been built in open areas, but as more projects are being considered in regions of complex topography and forestry, industry standard software tools like WAsP are unable to accurately model the wind flow. Without accurate modelling on these sites, prediction of energy yields and wind turbine loading are both prone to reduced accuracy and high uncertainty. This in turn influences the revenues and maintenance costs related to an operational wind farm on that site.
CFD can provide a detailed understanding of the effect of complex site surroundings on the wind regime. SgurrEnergy offers the powerful combination of Galion Lidar’s wind monitoring capability along with a CFD wind flow modelling service that is able to fully examine even the most complex wind farm surroundings. As with wind flow modelling, SgurrEnergy validates all computational models with available measured data. Detailed sensitivity studies are also conducted for CFD wind flow models to minimise uncertainty and to ensure generation of a robust wind flow model.
