In our experience, wind turbine generators (WTGs) are often misaligned at commissioning, introducing a static offset between nacelle position and wind direction. Static yaw errors can also occur throughout a wind turbine’s life; therefore it is common to identify static yaw error in operating assets.
During analysis, SgurrEnergy installs a ground based lidar at the base of WTGs to enable accurate calculation of static yaw error. A robust analytical technique is then applied to identify the yaw correction angle which will deliver maximum enhanced energy production on a long term basis. All static yaw error can be removed using this technique, which can lead to approximately GBP10,000 per WTG per year of savings at a typical wind farm if common error levels are identified, therefore there is high potential for optimisation.
