Growth in Pakistan as SgurrEnergy is appointed on 250MW wind farm

We are delighted to announce our appointment as owner’s engineer on the proposed NBT Pak 1 wind farm project in Pakistan. Developer of the project, NBT Pakistan Holdings Ltd. (a subsidiary of Norwegian wind developer, NBT AS), selected SgurrEnergy to provide engineering services including Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) tender document creation and indicative substation location assessments.

The 250MW wind farm, located in the Hyderabad area just off the Karachi Hyderabad highway, is targeting to reach financial close by the end of the year in order to begin construction in early 2013.

Pakistan’s renewable energy market is in its infancy and the country is seeking to diversify from traditional methods of energy generation to boost the market. Bloomberg reported just last year that the nation has a power deficit of three to four gigawatts per day and only 6MW of wind energy facilities were operational at that time.

Joar Viken, CEO of NBT AS, said: “We are very dedicated to helping Pakistan solve the power shortage situation with wind power in which Pakistan has very strong wind resources. We are excited to develop this wind farm in association with SgurrEnergy and will continue our work developing the other wind farms in our pipeline in Pakistan.”

SgurrEnergy’s Project Manager, Emily Pickering, said of the appointment: “Pakistan is an important and emerging market for renewable energy and we are delighted to support NBT on its flagship development. Our experienced engineering team will be providing owner’s engineer services to help the development reach financial close within the project schedules set, ensuring that the project is ready to move into the construction phase as planned.”

In addition to this exciting project, SgurrEnergy is working on another three wind energy projects in Pakistan. The team is providing owner’s engineer services on three 50MW wind farms, all of which are in the Jhampir wind corridor.
