Lidar is transforming the way the wind power industry measures the wind, and one key example where the benefit is felt is in power performance assessment offshore.
Power curve tests compare wind resource with the power generated by a wind turbine using that resource. They are necessary for checking the performance of wind turbines. The challenge associated with conducting these tests offshore arises due to the relatively high cost of acquiring the necessary wind data compared to onshore circumstances. The high cost offshore can mean tests are not conducted even though
• relatively novel turbine technology,
• high levels of investment and
• less well understood conditions
make the need for these tests more rather than less urgent.
Lidar is providing us with measurement opportunities that were not previously available. New methods are being developed to catch up with these possibilities. The risks offshore mean we can’t afford to ignore the opportunities made possible by lidar. These new opportunities are broadening the scope of the tests themselves: rather than being prohibitively expensive, offshore power curve tests can be low cost; rather than being exceptional, undertaking them can be routine; rather than being a one off warranty test, they can become an integral part of a strategy for securing successful offshore wind farm operations throughout their entire lifecycle.
