Hybrid power systems combine two or more energy conversion devices, or two or more fuels for the same device, that when integrated, overcome limitations inherent in either. Hybrid Systems typically integrate Renewable Technologies (such as Wind turbines, Photovoltaics, Solar Thermal or Bioenergy) with Storage solutions (such as Fuel Cells or battery systems) and Fossil fuel generators (such as diesel generators). They are controlled by Power Electronics systems which can be designed to maximize the use of renewables, resulting in a system with lower emissions and cost than traditional fossil-fueled technologies, while maintaining power quality, availability and other desired attributes.
Hybrid systems can address limitations in terms of fuel flexibility, efficiency, reliability, emissions and / or economics, make the whole system worth more than its individual parts, and are particular suited for remote (off grid) location, distribution support, and many other applications.
