Lidar wind resource assessment

SgurrEnergy also offer lidar resource assessment offering the following key advantages:

  • Drive up the P90 energy yield
  • Volumetric wind profiling and wind mapping
  • Measure wind shear profile across the whole rotor diameter.
  • No planning permission required
  • Verify wind flow models at multiple locations
  • Suitable for otherwise inaccessible locations
  • Can be deployed in forestry
  • Compact and portable enables quick and easy deployment
  • The perfect partner to cup anemometry

Project experience

SgurrEnergy’s team has vast experience in data logging and management having installed masts for a range of high profile players including BT, ScottishPower, Infinis, Airtricity, Novera Energy, Nuon Renewables, Honiton Energy, TNEI and Synergy. The company was the first to install and commission 70m guyed masts in the UK in 2002 and the Technical Services team are currently managing 70 masts in the UK and a further 30 in China, Canada, Pakistan, Korea, Philippines and Russia.

Installation and data recovery

SgurrEnergy can install wind monitoring masts ranging in height from 10m to 90m. Our Technical Services team provides regular data recovery and reporting on installed masts and lidar systems.

10 metre mast

  • The standard 10m mast consists of two anemometers and one wind direction vane
  • The mast is supported by steel guy wires in four directions
  • No cranes or concrete foundations are required
  • The wind speed and direction is recorded on a data logger attached to the mast

40 - 90 metre mast

The 40-90m masts contain four or more anemometers and two or more wind direction vanes at different heights on the tower. The measurements at different levels allow the wind shear profile of the site to be calculated.

  • The mast is supported by steel guy wires in four directions.
  • No cranes or concrete foundations are required.
  • The wind speed and direction from all the anemometers and direction vanes is recorded on a data logger attached to the mast. The data logger typically has a modem allowing remote data retrieval and diagnostic checks to be carried out.

On 10-90m masts, temperature, relative humidity, pressure and rain measurements can also be recorded. In addition we can supply bird flight diverters and aviation lighting.

Data recovery

Processing and archiving of the data from data logger is conducted three times a week via the GSM telemetry and charger solar panel system. Data quality will be screened each week and appended to the site dataset.

Preventative maintenance checks will also be carried out three times a week.

Monthly interim reporting is delivered via email and includes a monthly trend data sheet, report screen log and maintenance issues log it also includes the following:

  • Summary data sheet showing monthly trends graph to date
  • Wind speed frequency distribution
  • Turbulence intensity
  • Wind rose
  • Diurnal vibration in wind speed
  • Diurnal variation in wind sheer
  • Time series charts of wind speed and direction
