Offshore Wind Case Studies

SgurrEnergy has successfully focused its expertise and experience of renewable energy in support of a number of high profile offshore wind energy projects, either in direct support of the developers and owners, or on behalf of lenders and investors.

Below is a snapshot of our most recent assignments in the fields of offshore renewable energy. Visit offshore wind services for more detail on what we can offer or click on the following links for more information on specific projects:

Princess Amalia Wind Park - The world’s first project financed offshore wind farm

The Princess Amalia wind park produces around 435GWhs of electricity yearly, reducing the Netherlands dependency on fossil fuel imports. Formerly known as Q7, the Princess Amalia wind park is the world’s first project financed offshore wind park sitting 23km off of IJmuiden, Holland.

SgurrEnergy acted as technical advisor for this multi-megawatt project on behalf of a consortium of lenders. We performed the energy yield due diligence and carried out a technology assessment. We also carried out an analysis of long term wind speed trends to get the long term picture for the life of the wind farm and concluded the work with a quantification of the risks. We are ideally suited to carry out these responsibilities as we are 100% independent and provide sound impartial advice based on many years experience.

Lenders Engineer, Borkum West II (400MW), Dexia, KfW, HVB Unicredit, Rabobank, HSH Nordbank, Germany (2008)

SgurrEnergy are working with Metoc Plc and acting as the lenders engineer to a consortium of major project finance banks for a 400MW offshore wind farm in Germany. We have already provided a comprehensive due diligence report on the technical and contractual issues involved in the project, including assessments of contractual structure and interface risk, key project agreements, capabilities of the key project participants, energy yield and of the 5MW turbine. We have also reviewed the environmental and permitting aspects of the project.

Thorntonbank Offshore wind farm

SgurrEnergy teamed up with Mott MacDonald to perform the energy yield due diligence and carry out a technology assessment on behalf of the consortium of lenders for Thornton Bank offshore wind farm located 28 km off the Belgium coast near Zeebruge.  The work also included a quantification and mitigation of the development risks. The project has been operational since June 2008.

Ormonde offshore wind farm, (150MW), Dexia, Bank of Scotland, Unicredit and Societe Generale, UK (2008 – ongoing)

SgurrEnergy, in partnership with Metoc plc, has been appointed as lenders engineer to advise a consortium of lenders on the development of a 150MW offshore wind farm. This project is part of the world’s first offshore gas-wind hybrid energy generation project sited in the Irish Sea.

As the appointed lenders engineer, SgurrEnergy has provided:

  • Full environmental and technical review of the wind farm, covering key project agreements and contracts
  • Capex and Opex review, design, installation and construction
  • A turbine technology review
  • Environmental and permitting issues

The project has gained planning approval and completion is anticipated in 2009.

China wind energy development offshore 1000MW

This project encompasses multiple sites along the coast. SgurrEnergy carried out the following:

  • Site selection & coastal development integration.
  • Preliminary wind farm layouts, visual simulations & environmental impacts.
  • Preliminary design of geotechnical surveys.
  • Design, procure & commission offshore wind & sea-state monitoring stations.
  • Detailed wind farm design & preliminary foundation assessment.

Fujian, China offshore wind energy resource exploitation, (multi MW), CRESP, China (2007)

As an internationally recognised expert in the development of renewable energy projects, SgurrEnergy was engaged through the China Renewable Energy Scale-up Programme (CRESP) which is funded by the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility to evaluate multiple sites along the Chinese coast. The work included a site visit to the Fujian coast and the preparation of a report that will map out a strategy for development of offshore wind farms in the region by considering a broad range of technical, financial and economic drivers and constraints.

The results of our work will form part of a central part of the Chinese Government strategy for developing offshore wind projects for China.

Inner Dowsing & Lynn offshore wind farms (180MW), Scottish & Southern Energy, UK
SgurrEnergy provided the energy yield and layout design due diligence for these offshore projects, on behalf of Scottish & Southern Energy.
