SgurrEnergy has been commissioned to carry out a comprehensive wind monitoring assessment on behalf of BT. The telecommunications giant has ambitious plans to develop a wind farm portfolio that will generate up to 25 per cent of its current UK electricity requirements by 2016. The £250million scheme, which represents the UK’s biggest corporate wind-power project outside of the energy sector, is part of the company’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint.
Subject to planning consent, the communications provider aims to install 100MW of generating capacity by 2012, with a further 150MW targeted by 2016.
SgurrEnergy’s multi-disciplinary team will deliver wind monitoring, wind data analysis, wind farm layout optimisation and energy yield assessments on up to ten sites throughout the UK. Masts have already been installed on BT sites south of Exeter and on Orkney, with wind analysis expected to begin in March this year.
SgurrEnergy has extensive experience in delivering wind analysis work – projects include the 322MW Whitelee project near Glasgow which represents Europe’s largest wind farm development. The company is currently managing over 50 wind monitoring masts on other projects throughout the UK, Europe and in China.
Wind analysis manager, Richard Boddington said: “We have developed key specialisms in all aspects of wind monitoring and wind analyis and offer unparalled consultancy advice to lenders, investors and operators. BT is pioneering the use of wind energy to reduce their carbon emissions in the race against climate change. It is a great example of how businesses can derive their energy from green sources and it’s not just the wind farm developers that can carry out such activity. SgurrEnergy has advised businesses, particularly high energy users, on many types of renewable energy including solar, biomass and ground source heat pumps to help lower their carbon footprints.”
